This forum software really needs a "Like" button. :D Love seeing this skiing. It never gets old.

This platform for the forum is sure lacking in many areas as far as posting. If there were alternatives I'd be interested. There is a possibility for a private page set up on Facebook where only members can post and read posts.

Unfortunately, that would exclude those of us who don't have/refuse to get a Facebook login. There is a growing group of people who are concerned about the privacy aspects of having a Facebook profile and can't access content contained within their platform.

I, too, would never get near Facebook. I understand HH has a lot of nice content over there... but I'll never see it.

what about reddit? Subreddits are free and can be made private or moderated.

Totally agree about Reddit - easily the best discussion platform out there.

Is Reddit a good option? Depends on who you ask.

The new reddit UI is awful.

Ask HN: Is “new” Reddit completely unusable for anyone else?

IMO our current platform is better for the audience we have here.

Probably, the closest modern software that aimed to replace forums is Discourse. Here is the demo: https://try.discourse.org/.
It has likes, excellent mobile support, modern user interface, badges, nice notifications, modern embedding content and all the bells and whistles.
The important thing would be converting existing forum without loosing anything (there must be existing scripts for doing this).
However, IMO existing forum works fine.
